Santa Cop Program
Collins Community Credit Union partnered with the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Charity to raise money for the Santa Cop program. This annual program takes place at a store in town and pairs police officers and children together to shop for winter gear and a new toy.
These children are from low-income households and are recommended to the program through schools, churches and other organizations. It not only helps get them the clothing they need but it helps build positive relationships between the children and the police officers.
One of the main challenges the officers want to overcome is to simply bring awareness to this program. Collins donated hours from their retainer with Plaid Swan so we could work on promoting the Santa Cop event.
Knowing that awareness and collecting donations were the two main goals for this project, we set out to make sure that the program was being discussed all day, every day on social media and in the news. We utilized our connections to radio and television partners and arranged for interviews featuring officers and Collins employees to discuss what Santa Cop is all about, how it works and where to donate.
We were able to organize interviews as well as coordinate recorded segments that aired on radio stations in the local market. The story was picked up by area newspapers and on television news segments. $15,300 was raised and 102 children were able to “shop with a cop.” The police officers and those in attendance commented that this was the best Santa Cop event yet!
